Jacobs Engineering work experience week programme

At African Challenge Scotland, we are committed to providing opportunities to young people who may otherwise face exclusion, discrimination or lack of opportunity. We are grateful to have 4 of our young people on this year Jacobs Engineering work experience week programme, and they will be covering all aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).Young people will get to speak to a great range of professionals from across the company and then work in groups to complete a challenge, which will be judged at the end of the week. Not only will it give them some real insight into the working world, but it'll also give them a chance to try a few different industry options if they're still undecided on their career path. This highlights our dedication to reaching and supporting disadvantaged young people.A huge thanks to Jacobs Engineering office in Glasgow, their STEAM Ambassadors and all involved and for all the work done to prepare for this and to those that already did their presentations/activities yesterday and today – they were incredible.

African Challenge Scotland young people visits new frigate HMS GLASGOW.
Young people from our diverse community in Glasgow visited future frigate HMS Glasgow to discover and acknowledge the advent of a new generation of warships into service.Currently undergoing completion in a dry dock at BAE’s shipbuilding facility in Scotstoun, Glasgow of the first of eight Type 26 frigates which will be in the front -line of defending the Navy from the prying eyes of hostile submarines.Due in service later this decade, the ships mark a considerable leap forward over their predecessors in many areas - bigger ships yet fewer crew, increased use of autonomous systems/mechanisation, new thinking such as adaptable mission bays for whatever tasks are assigned. After a tour of the new frigate, young people spent time with the Glasgow Royal Navy to discuss the challenges, technology, innovation as well as other general issues including how the ship’s company were making best use of the time in build to meet the demands and deadlines which will allow the Navy to accept the frigate into service in a timely manner.Huge thanks to Royal Navy Recruitment and BAE Systems for arranging and organising this great opportunity.
